The first major battle of the English Civil War was fought on these fields, between the villages of Radway and Kineton in the county of Warwickshire on the 23rd October, 1642. The battle of Edgehill was intended to be the one great battle to decide the war, but instead led to 5 years of conflict between the King and Parliament, until his arrest and finally beheading in 1649.

Upon the hill stood the Royalist troops of the King facing the army of Parliament under the leadership of the Earl of Essex.

By nightfall no one side had gained advantage and therefore the next day the Parliamentarian army made their way northward to Warwick in retreat, and left the Royalists in command of the road to the London.
